Computer Protection

Someone contacted me recently to gather my thoughts on protection for a computer, and in the wake, this is what I replied with.
They mentioned their use of “Stopzilla” antivirus, etc.  After paying about $240 a year for antivirus, antispyware, and telephone support, they were looking for a cheaper solution, but one that was reliable.  They agreed that because of the services they received on several occasions when viruses attacked, Stopzilla was worth it, but they wanted a cheaper way to go.
Here are some programs I have found do wonders-ALL FOR FREE!
Antivirus (a must):  AVG free version does the job well and does not slow your computer.  You can pay to get more features.
Antispyware:  Ad-aware does ok, otherwise, Spybot Search and Destroy is very popular.
Anti-Malware:  Malwarebytes Antimalware is great – it has gotten rid of almost every virus I’ve ever had.
Computer Cleanup:  ccleaner is an absolute must-have for every computer.  Run the registry scan as well as cleanup.
File Backup:  One of the most important things to do to a computer is to back it up.  Will it be ok when your computer dies?  What happens when your baby’s pictures from 10 years ago are destroyed when the computer dies? (don’t pay $3,000 to get your info back, get DROPBOX for FREE!)
Web Filtering: Another very important thing you must have is a web filter. If you are like my family, you have several computers and you do not want to pay for a filter on each computer. Someone told me about once and I’ve used it ever since. It is a filter which is very easy to configure.  First, you set up a free account, then you change your filter settings on their website.  Then you type two numbers into your router, and poof, every device on your network is filtered. Besides the filter it has basic ad and malware protection, and many, many other options.  It is very simple to set up and includes easy-to-follow directions…and best of all?  It’s free!
Ad Blocking:  One very annoying thing about,,, and many other websites is the ads that are on them.  Not only do they slow your connection, but many times there are things I’d rather not see! for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and other not-so-well-known-browsers is very good.  It also helps keep your computer clean because those ads aren’t getting to your browser to clog up your computer.
